if netplan is the direction Debian and Ubuntu are going, then we should instead translate the files in /etc/systemd/network/ into /etc/netplan/armbian-default.yaml
But I don’t see this in the configuration, yet. It looks like it might be distro-agnostic.sh that’s seeing the Network Manager installed, and therefore preferring it. So it might be as simple as just NOT installing NM.

We would probably need to enable systemd-networkd for this board?

Network is configured through files in /etc/systemd/network/ that are placed by the bsp package. But systemd-networkd is masked in the current image. This problem can be resolved by unmasking systemd-networkd.
